Kivukoni Fish Market

Today I decided to take a break from writing research protocols (I’ve been doing a lot of that lately) and documenting one more of my adventures in Tanzania instead. This time I want to talk about my visit to the unmistakable Kivukoni Fish Market in Dar es Salaam, they say is the biggest fish market in East Africa. This happened three weeks ago, when Caroline and I decided to explore a bit more around the city.

We arrived around 6:30 am, when the sun had begun its ascension over the harbor to uncover the beauty of an organized chaos. It was a paradise for those afficionated to photography. Uncountable fisherman offloading their catch from the boats moored in the bay made a perfect portrait.
Women wearing beautiful khangas while meticulously cleaning the tiniest fish ever seen were a delight for the eye. They looked even more beautiful when gathered around one of the many fish action tables, ready to bid on different types of fish captured from the Indian Ocean. A thrilling trading action that has nothing to envy from those seen in the movies about the legendary Wall Street stock market in NYC.

Hopefully, what I captured is a decent representation of such an inspiring morning, and hopefully it will inspire me to finish writing another research protocol...
